Beyond 2015 writes a second letter to the UN Secretary General
Directors of 64 organisations (36 Southern and 28 Northern) from 33 countries (21 Southern and 12 Northern) sent a letter (see here) on behalf of the Beyond 2015 campaign to the UN Secretary General on 19 October 2011.
The letter was drafted by an ad-hoc taskforce consisting of representatives from VOICE (Bangladesh), ABONG (Brazil), ACCIÓN (Chile), ATD Fourth World (France), Campaign 2015+ (Nigeria), CESR (Spain), CAFOD (United Kingdom), Tearfund (United Kingdom), GCAP (Zambia) and CCJPZ (Zimbabwe). Their draft was then circulated and received feedback from dozens of organisations before reaching its final wording.
The aim of the letter was to share with the UNSG a number of recommendations and action points that would maximise the chances of a UN-led post-2015 agreement meeting the Beyond 2015 "essential must-haves" of leadership, substance, accountability and legitimacy.
As such the letter encouraged the Secretary General to provide his personal leadership on the post-2015 agenda, to lay out his vision for the process in a detailed roadmap, and welcomed the Secretary General’s commitment towards a process open to a multi-stakeholder participation.
As far as the post-2015 planning process is concerned, the signatories of the letter asked the SG to consider the prompt creation of an Independent Commission to overview and manage the whole process, and to provide this body with the necessary strength and visibility by appointing as its chair a former President of an emerging or developing country personally involved in the fight against poverty.
These recommendations stem from the paper “Towards a successor framework to the Millennium Development Goals: Next steps for the United Nations”. This report (which you can read here) was drafted by Beyond 2015 and was sent attached to the letter to Mr Ban Ki-moon.
While we wait for the official response from the Secretary General, Beyond 2015 encourages participating organisations to share the report with their national governments and permanent representatives to the UN - especially important given the UN General Assembly discussions on post-2015 on 18 November.
If you share this report with national representatives, please let us know by contacting gvives@concordeurope.org
